Hermorrhoids are abnormal dilations of the veins of the rectum or anus, similar with varices. If it is normal that the veins of the recto-anal area swell slightly at the time of defecation, the hemorrhoid term indicates the distension or the recurring or relatively permanent congestion of these veins. They are noticed by a clear red bleeding after having gone to the restroom, by a painful defecation and sometimes by discomfort to remain sitting. This momentary effct would affect 50 % of the old population of more than 50 years.
